See how a truck launch rewrote the playbook for an industry
As Volvo Trucks North America prepared to introduce the new Volvo VNL across the U.S. and Canada, it needed a digital experience that could match the ambition of the launch. This case study shows how Code and Theory helped reimagine that experience to connect with a more tech-savvy trucking audience.
In an industry typically characterized by slower adoption of technological advancements, Code and Theory helped Volvo Trucks shatter the mold with the redesign and digital reveal of their flagship VNL long-haul truck.
Key Takeaways
Reframed a traditional product launch into a culture-first story that made a heavy-industry brand feel relevant and shareable
Used a single, bold creative idea to simplify a complex product message and give audiences a clear reason to pay attention
Orchestrated an integrated rollout that let the story travel across channels and communities, extending reach through participation rather than repetition
Proved that even in conservative categories, distinctive creativity and disciplined execution can reset expectations for what a launch can achieve

Designed for a digitally savvy driver
What comes to your mind when you think about a long-haul truck driver? Whatever you're thinking, rethink it.
The next generation of truckers are both digitally and technologically savvy. For their life on the road, often living inside their truck for days at a time, they demand a connected, comfortable, state-of-the-art environment.
This innovative VNL truck (and now digital experience) serves their every need.

A digital-first launch that set new records
Volvo Trucks heavily invested in this effort because the VNL matters deeply to its business and brand, accounting for the bulk of Volvo Trucks North America’s sales.
Our year-long partnership was a meticulous design, strategy and communications effort to ensure the all-new VNL launch made a massive impact, and our inaugural digital-first launch did not disappoint. We set new records for visitors and engagement on launch day in January 2024. Since then we've sustained that momentum with website users and views (+108%) through our ongoing communication strategy.
Impact
Volvo Trucks North America’s all-new Volvo VNL launch turned a redesigned website into a digital showroom and the hub of a broader, multi-media campaign. With influencer marketing, social content, and a keynote digital reveal from Volvo Trucks’ President driving audiences in, the experience guided customers through an informative, immersive journey of what life will be like on the open road.

Giving truckers the keys to customize
We knew the only way today's tech-savvy truckers could appreciate the full power of the all-new VNL redesign (short of a test drive) would be to build one themselves. Our state-of-the-art configurator is a uniquely customizable interactive experience for all industry audiences— drivers, owner-operators and fleet managers alike.
The configurator is a critical tool in how Volvo Trucks is building a path to a new paradigm in user education and conversion, and the numbers don't lie: in the first six weeks after launch, the VNL configurator had 950 submitted builds, compared to 1,045 — in all of 2023.
Mirroring the in-person experience, customers start from the outside of the truck and work their way in, selecting their preferred paint colors, trim details, all the way down to which reclining bed and amenities packages best fit their needs. All this lives in a hyper-realistic 3D setting, rendering thousands of configuration variations in seconds. Any configuration can be saved, shared, socialized, or sent to a dealer for continued engagement ahead of the trucks’ availability for purchase.
“This new digital experience leapfrogs us years ahead of our competition much like our vehicles. The bar was high and Code and Theory created a digital presence that soared even higher.”

From the original VNL to the all-new launch
In 1996, Volvo Trucks introduced the original VNL: a truck designed with a groundbreaking aerodynamic form for increased long-haul fuel efficiency.
In 2024, Volvo Trucks trusted Code and Theory to help them not only launch the newest VNL, but to rewrite the playbook.
A premium launch, built to last
Our year-long partnership around the all-new VNL showed that premium is more than a product. It’s a layered campaign and digital-first experience designed to meet the next generation of truckers where they are.
From the launch in January 2024 through ongoing communications, Volvo Trucks built momentum that helped rewrite the playbook for the heavy-duty truck and transportation industry—and set a foundation for what comes next.

What We Did
Developed and launched a new campaign playbook for introducing Volvo Trucks to market
Produced launch creative and messaging designed to stand out in an industry category
Delivered an integrated rollout across key channels to support the truck launch
Created a launch toolkit of assets to enable consistent execution across touchpoints
A truck launch that rewrote the industry playbook
By treating the launch as more than a product announcement, we reframed expectations for what a truck debut could be and built a clearer story around it. We focused on the themes that mattered most, shaping the narrative so it could be understood quickly and shared easily. The work brought the product and the brand into sharper focus, giving the launch a point of view rather than a list of features.
The result was a launch designed to travel beyond the usual channels and reach people who don’t typically follow the category. With a consistent message and a strong creative throughline, the story carried across touchpoints without losing clarity. It helped Volvo Trucks show up with confidence, turning a moment of release into a broader statement about where the brand is headed.
