A Junior Packaging Designer should have strong visual packaging design skills as well as good knowledge of structural design. At Code and Theory, we create entire product ecosystems and part of that is packaging. Our packaging Designers at Code and Theory are challenged to create packaging that is as functional as it is evocative. They have the opportunity to be a connection between hardware and branding and help a brand/product make a great first impression.

Typically Junior Packaging Designers at Code and Theory are involved in the following activities:

  • Conceptualizing creative ideas and using mockups to push the expectations of what a great packaging solution can be
  • They will work closely with other teams such as industrial designers, mechanical engineers and user experience designers to create unique packaging concepts from start to finish
  • Take creative direction from project lead and execute on that direction, while also bringing their own ideas to the project
  • Creating mock-ups of packaging concepts for internal and client review
  • Creating and proofing mechanicals/dielines and reviewing them with manufacturers
  • Understanding vendors and manufacturers capabilities to create designs within the constraints
  • Working on various tasks and projects to develop multidisciplinary skill set
  • Researching and keeping up to date on packaging trends


  • 1+ Year of experience in visual design, preferably in packaging
  • Proficient in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign/Keynote/Powerpoint
  • Examples of visual work outside of packaging design (Editorial, Digital, Brand, etc)
  • Excellent sense and intuition for visual design, particularly for packaging–typography, layout, photography, illustrations, etc
  • Good basic understanding and knowledge of structural design–materials and manufacturing processes (folded paper, molded inserts, etc)
  • Pays attention to detail–from creating designs to checking files
  • Demonstrates a range of visual approaches to solving problems and telling stories
  • Ability to create unique points of view, reasoning and logic to support their creative ideas
  • Always looking to push their ideas further and challenge their own thinking
  • Loves being a self initiator with to come up with new ideas and projects
  • Great at communicating and expressing ideas visually and verbally
  • Feel comfortable working in a fast pace environment–to work fast and efficient
  • Always eager to learn and grow professionally
